JACARANDA PLACE: FROM CONCEPTION TO IMPLEMENTATION

Abstract

Background: Jacaranda Place (JP) is a unique treatment centre in that it has been specifically designed and established as a subacute unit to provide care to young people from around the state of Queensland with complex and severe mental health difficulties. The development of JP has involved co-design from its inception and continues to involve consumers as part of its ongoing iterative development. Empowerment and collaboration are integral components of the model of care, with the aim of combining clinical and personal recovery goals. To achieve this a proactive approach was taken. Objectives: To lead life-changing care for young people experiencing mental illness where they find hope, support and build the resilience needed to be the best person they can. To achieve this, we aim to create meaningful partnerships with young people, their families/carers and their networks. Methods: JP was developed and implemented in a codesigned recovery-oriented and trauma-informed way. A treatment framework centring on Adaptive Mentalization- Based Integrative Treatment (AMBIT), has been employed to provide care that promotes recovery in severe and complex young people from around Queensland. Conclusion: Co-designed and recovery-oriented treatment is possible and considered highly beneficial to young people. To achieve a truly collaborative and empowerment-oriented approach, development of a culture centred on these values is necessary within health services.
