Title: | ALK-Positive Histiocytosis with Peripheral Blood Histiocytes: A Case Report | Authors: | Barbaro, P. Swain, F. Williams, B. |
Issue Date: | 2021 | Source: | 144, (2), 2021, p. 218-221 | Pages: | 218-221 | Journal: | Acta Haematologica | Abstract: | Histiocytoses are a diverse group of rare, clinically heterogeneous disorders characterised by tissue infiltration of histiocytes, which may result in organ dysfunction and failure. Over 100 different subtypes of histiocytoses have been recognised, including rare cases of ALK-positive histiocytosis. We report a case of histiocytosis in a neonate who presented with refractory thrombocytopenia, anaemia, and intermittent neutropenia. Histiocytes were present in both peripheral blood smears and bone marrow; ALK positivity was demonstrated by immunohistochemistry. Given the scarce reports of this condition, the variable organ involvement, and the different approaches to management in the cases described, we seek to expand the literature by providing a report of our patient whose condition improved without chemotherapy. The presence of histiocytes in peripheral blood smears of patients with this condition has not previously been reported, and it underscores the importance of routine careful evaluation of blood smears.L6325317922020-08-12 | DOI: | 10.1159/000508524 | Resources: | https://www.embase.com/search/results?subaction=viewrecord&id=L632531792&from=exporthttp://dx.doi.org/10.1159/000508524 | | Keywords: | blood smear;bone marrow;bone marrow biopsy;bone marrow examination;breathing disorder;case report;cesarean section;clinical article;coughing;developmental delay;emergency surgery;erythrocyte count;erythrocyte transfusion;erythrophagocytosis;failure to thrive;female;fetus distress;hematopoiesis;hemoglobin blood level;hepatosplenomegaly;histiocyte;histiocytosis;human;immunohistochemistry;interstitial lung disease;lung infiltrate;multidisciplinary team;neutropenia;newborn;nuclear magnetic resonance imaging;oxygen therapy;pallor;petechia;phagocytosis;platelet count;pneumonia;priority journal;refractory thrombocytopenia;respiratory syncytial virus infection;steroid therapy;thorax radiography;thrombocyte transfusion;X ray;thrombocytopenia;C reactive proteincotrimoxazole;fluconazole;gentamicin;hemoglobin;immunoglobulin;penicillin G;piperacillin plus tazobactam;prednisone;ALK positive histiocytosis;anemia;antibiotic prophylaxis;antibiotic therapy;Apgar score;article;blood cell count | Type: | Article |
