Title: | Hyperbilirubinaemia: its utility in non-perforated appendicitis | Authors: | Grieve, D. A. Sandstrom, A. |
Issue Date: | 2017 | Source: | 87, (7-8), 2017, p. 587-590 | Pages: | 587-590 | Journal: | ANZ Journal of Surgery | Abstract: | BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of acute appendicitis is made using clinical findings and investigations. Recent studies have suggested that serum bilirubin, a cheap and simple biochemical test, is a positive predictor in the diagnosis of appendiceal perforation and may be more specific than C-reactive protein (CRP) and white cell count (WCC). The aim of this study was to investigate the utility of the serum bilirubin level in patients with suspected acute but non-perforative appendicitis.METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 213 patients who presented with suspected appendicitis in a 6-month period to Nambour General Hospital was performed. Serum bilirubin, WCC and CRP were recorded and analysed as to their utility in relation to the final diagnosis. | Resources: | http://scproxy.slq.qld.gov.au/login?url=http://ovidsp.ovid.com/ovidweb.cgi?T=JS&CSC=Y&NEWS=N&PAGE=fulltext&D=prem&AN=26573997http://linksource.ebsco.com/athens.b6e6cc08-c492-42af-aec4-c6084e18e68c/linking.aspx?sid=OVID:medline&id=pmid:26573997&id=doi:10.1111%2Fans.13373&issn=1445-1433&isbn=&volume=87&issue=7&spage=587&date=2017&title=ANZ+Journal+of+Surgery&atitle=Hyperbilirubinaemia%3A+its+utility+in+non-perforated+appendicitis.&aulast=Sandstrom&pid=%3CAN%3E26573997%3C%2FAN%3E | Type: | Article |
